Berrington Hall

Berrington Hall, a neoclassical country house designed by Henry Holland in 1778-81 for Thomas Harley features Capability Brown’s last landscape design.

It has been in the care of the National Trust since 1957 and The Triumphal Arch is situated in one half of the entrance archway to Berrington Hall. Formerly a coachman’s home, and later a shooting lodge, it is now a spacious holiday home. The Triumphal Arch and Gates to Berrington Hall are designated Grade II Listed and form part of the curtilage of The Berrington Estate (Grade I).

We were asked by the National Trust to complete a restoration of the Triumphal Arch cast iron gates at Berrington Hall. Once the gates arrived in our workshop the gates were blast cleaned and fully inspected so we could evaluate the damage, it was discovered that a number of the bars in the gates had been replaced previously with steel bar. This required x 6 cast bar to be bespoke cast in ISO 185/JL/200 Cast Iron.

A bespoke furnace was built around the gates and after gas fusion welding the welded areas were ground back to their original profile. On inspection, it was discovered that the lock face plate was cracked and misshaped and that there was some damage to the internal workings of the lock. A new brass face plate for the lock was necessary, the lock was rebuilt, and new keys were hand cut.

Due to the size of the gates, a bespoke frame was manufactured which enabled us to manipulate the gates to any desired position to carry out the repairs, this frame was also used for the transportation back to the site to be refitted. The gates were re-installed at Berrington Hall and then the paint removal and application process was completed on site.

Shrewsbury Bridge Cast Iron Repairs

We were asked by the caretakers of Kingsland Bridge if we could repair the cast iron Rosettes on the handrails running across the footpath of the bridge.

When we received the Rosettes into our workshop it was clear to see they had split into two parts from age and exposure to the British elements for many years. CIWS prepared the sections for welding and using our unique FusionCast™ process fused the sections back together. Once cool the Rosettes pattern was recreated for painting and re-installing.
