Historic Cast Iron Paving Restoration
Cast Iron Welding Services is passionate about conservation and works hard to restore heritage items back to their original condition.
Cast iron on our highways is another unique and important part of history that we should restore and retain for the benefit of future generations. At Cast Iron Welding Services, our experienced team will apply their knowledge and passion to bring the Victorian era back to life.
When it comes to restoring the natural beauty of cast iron, we are passionate. The team at Cast Iron Welding Services are expert heritage restorers and will offer you a first-class service, no matter how unique or unusual your project is.
We will first attend the site to assess the project in its natural environment. From there, we can formulate a restoration plan. If possible, and particularly with smaller items such as paving, we will deploy specialist equipment to relocate the item back to our workshop in Leicestershire, where we can start the testing process and evaluate the extent of damage and cracks.
Then, the process of bringing the project back to life can begin. At Cast Iron Welding Services, we have developed our own unique Gas Fusion Welding Process to repair cracks in cast iron. The process creates a stress-free weld and a material with improved metallurgical and machining properties compared to those of the parent metal. The final metal is tested, and certification is issued. Your restoration is in safe hands.
The finishing details are often what link an item with a particular period in time. We hand-paint heritage items in the workshop and are meticulous about restoring the original design of the piece.
Victorian Cast Iron Paving and Drainage
Cast Iron Pavement Lights
During 19th-century industrialisation, the streets of many major cities experienced a huge increase in the volume of traffic. The rapid increase in population, coupled with new transport demands during the Industrial Revolution, meant that road and pavement surfaces needed attention, and cast iron was a popular choice.
Cast iron paving was designed using a cast frame and a glass insert. Inlaid glass allowed natural light into the area below and became extremely fashionable during the Victorian era. These decorative paving sections can be seen in many cities.
Cast Iron Welding Services is passionate about conservation and works hard to restore heritage items to their original condition. Retaining these items as they integrate with the surrounding landscape and architecture is important. Due to the longevity of the material we are still using and repairing cast iron paving today.
Cast Iron Kerbstones
Cast iron was often used to manufacture kerbstones historically. The material is extremely robust and able to withstand collision from early metal ridged cart wheels. Cast iron kerbing was so successful that it was implemented along busy roads throughout many cities.
Cast Iron Drain Covers
Cast iron drainage grates and manhole covers were also a feature of the Victorian era and were developed from a need to conceal the drainage network beneath the streets. As an impervious material, it helped to contain sewerage smells and bacteria.
Cast iron manholes are perhaps the most interesting drainage antiques as they contain valuable information from the time of their manufacture. Indeed a timeline through the history of urbanisation can be gleaned just from following the information on manhole covers.
Not only do manhole covers record important events over time, but they can also be hugely decorative. Cast Iron Welding Services will restore the details of these important architectural items for future generations to appreciate and enjoy.
